The materials are primarily legal documents, such as deeds and indentures either addressed to or signed by a member of the Crane family. Biographical Sketch of the Crane Family
The Cranes are the founding family of Montclair. Jasper Crane (1608 – 1681) came from Hampshire, England in the early 17th century. He is listed as one of the first colonists of New Haven, Connecticut, and later settled in Newark, New Jersey. In 1694, Jasper’s son Azariah (d. 1730) built one of the first houses in what is now Montclair on the three hundred acres of land that Jasper had willed to him.1 The area became known as Cranetown. Azariah was very involved in the development of both the town and the church in Newark. His son Nathaniel (1680 – 1760) was also active within the town, and played a crucial role in the establishment of a new church that was closer and more convenient than the church in Newark. Nathaniel’s son Noah (1719 – 1800) contributed to the building of a third church in the area. 2
The Cranes were an extremely prolific family with many divisions and branches. Many of them were prominent citizens and were well-known in Cranetown and its surrounding area. Zenas Crane, a descendant of Azariah and a member of the family whose name appears quite frequently in this collection, was a distinguished magistrate and civil engineer. Israel Crane (1774 – 1858) was perhaps the most prominent and successful member of the Crane family. He was a respected businessman and ran a large general store.3 His store eventually became so important that he organized the construction of the Newark-Pompton Turnpike to connect Cranetown to the farming regions. This road is still in use today as a major road between several towns. Israel Crane was considered the wealthiest man in the area at that time. His home, a 1796 Federal-style mansion, was acquired by MHS in 1965. 4
Scope and Content
The documents contained in this collection are dated as early as 1752, and continue to 1889. The bulk of the collection was created in the early to mid-nineteenth century (approximately 1800-1850). For the most part, the collection is made up of legal documents, such as deeds, quit claims, indentures, commissions and wills. Many of them are real estate transactions, dealing mostly with land in Montclair and Bloomfield. The Cranes were very influential in these areas. In some documents, Montclair is referred to by its previous names (Cranetown and West Bloomfield). Zenas Crane appears quite often in the documents; other significant names include (but are not limited to) Azariah Crane, Israel Crane, Aaron Crane, Joseph Crane, David D. Crane, Elias Crane, Elizabeth Crane, Job Crane, Noah Crane, John Crane, Oliver Crane, Amos Crane, and Jeptha Crane.
Most of the documents in the collection are either completely or partially handwritten in ink on paper. Many of the deeds are printed legal forms, filled out by hand and signed in ink. Several of the indentures that deal with land are also printed forms. All of the apprenticeship indentures are completely handwritten. In regards to their physical condition, many of the documents are very fragile. The paper has become very thin and crumbles easily. Most of the deeds had been folded into eighths due to the large size of the paper. The folds are quite vulnerable to tearing, so the documents must be unfolded with the utmost caution. Some of the other documents that were created on smaller pieces of paper and were in particularly fragile conditions had previously been placed in clear plastic protective sleeves. The collection also contains a number of books and bound items, such as journals, ledgers, copybooks, genealogy books, and Bibles. Some are leather-bound, while others are either paperback or uncovered. The type of binding for each of these items has been noted in the Container List.
Arrangement Note
As a result of various changes in ownership and location of the materials, the collection has been shuffled around quite a bit. Whatever original order the documents may have been in at one time has long been disregarded. The collection was found in a series of manila folders in boxes. For the most part, the documents have been left in the order in which they were most recently found; however, in some cases, documents that clearly did not belong with the documents with which they were found were relocated to a part of the collection that made more sense. Many of the folders contain only one item or very few items due to the age and fragility of the paper. The books and bound items have also mostly been left in the order in which they were found. The smaller books, such as the ledger books, copybooks, and journals, had been previously arranged in the manuscript boxes, and the larger, hardcover books such as the Bibles had been previously placed in flat clamshell boxes. This arrangement was deemed sufficient and thus was not changed.

All of the subject and authorized name headings were taken from the Library of Congress Authority Files.5
