Exploring Immigration and Migration Through Objects and Primary Sources

Level 1: Grades 5 - 8 Level 2: Grades 9 - 12

Using touch-objects as well as primary sources such as census records, newspaper excerpts, Redlining Maps, and a manumission record, students will explore immigration, migration, and forced migration spanning over two centuries. These programs introduce students to events that influenced the movement of people.

 

Discovering Black History through Primary and Secondary Sources

Level 1: Grades 5 through 8 Level 2: Grades 9 through 12

Discovering Black History Through Primary and Secondary Sources is specifically designed to introduce students to primary and secondary documents. This program gives students an opportunity to explore Black history spanning over 200 years. Students will have the opportunity to examine a Bill of Sale of an enslaved person as well as “runaway ads,” investigate local redlining maps, and listen to first-hand accounts from the women of the segregated Montclair YWCA. This program opens the doors to dialogue pertaining to the value of research materials in relation to our understanding of history.

Early American Life on the Hearth

Grades 3 - 6

Led by our museum educators, students will be able to participate in an interactive, inquiry-based “visit” to our historic hearth kitchen. They will experience a live cooking demonstration while learning about early life in agricultural communities. This virtual program is approximately one hour long at a cost of $175 per class. Days and times can be tailored to your needs.
