Landsberger Learning Gardens

The Landsberger Learning Gardens interpret the historical connections between food, herbs, and Montclair’s agricultural past. Since MHC’s founding in 1965, these gardens have played a central role in our educational programming and events. Featuring historically significant plant varieties, the gardens provide rich sensory experiences while educating visitors about the culinary and medicinal uses of these plants throughout history, specifically the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Learning Gardens remain a vital educational resource. The gardens are regularly incorporated into summer camp programming, museum tours, and the historic hearth kitchen bringing the site’s food pathways and landscapes to life. These gardens strengthen the visitors’ understanding of Montclair’s agricultural heritage.

the Meadow

The Meadow, which launched in 2020, transformed an overgrown and underutilized area behind our historic buildings into a vibrant landscape of educational gardens. Following the careful removal of invasive species, the site was reimagined as an ecological and interpretive resource that reflects both the region’s natural heritage and the museum’s commitment to environmental stewardship. Today, the Meadow features more than 2,000 native and pollinator-friendly plantings, including perennials, grasses, and woody shrubs that support birds, butterflies, bees, and other essential pollinators. The Meadow offers visitors opportunities to learn about native ecosystems, sustainable land management, and the environmental history of the region. The meadow also provides an active educational space for programming and events. Full list of plants in the meadow.
