This fragrant, naturalizing heirloom has large, more star-shaped, reflexed white petals and a small, yellow, red-edged cup with a green eye. It is one of the latest flowering Narcissi. Also known as Scilla bifolia carnea or the Alpine Squill, this lightly scented 17th century naturalizer has trusses of star-shaped light pink florets and strappy foliage. It’s a lovely addition to rock gardens, woodlands and garden borders. Generally referred to as Wood Squill, deer- and rodent-resistant Scilla naturalize readily in areas of light shade or dappled sunlight. When it’s really happy where planted, it can naturalize by both bulb offsets (baby bulbs on the sides of the mother bulb you’ve planted) and self-sowing seed. You’ll need about nine bulbs per square foot. (Square footage is determined multiplying the planting site’s length times its width.) Highly awarded, China Town opens pale pinkish-white with bold green feathering and striking white-edged, blue-green foliage. As its long-lasting flowers mature, they deepen in color to rich phlox-pink with carmine-rose edges and somewhat less prominent green feathering. It is a bit short for a late blooming Tulip, growing to just 12" tall, so it is perfect for border clusters. (Did you know that the phenomena of marginated foliage occurs due to a lack of or insufficient pigmentation and chlorophyll in the plant cells on the outer petal edges?)
